The influence of moderniztion can be seen in Gutton's 1952 master plan for the city. The adaptations were troubling as Gutton directly applied western city models without considering the infastructure and richness of the old city. His main purpose was to increase accessibility, and widen the roads for easy transportation to enhance Aleppo's economical role in the region. However such imposed changes impaired with the Old City's historical fabric.
